Holes in silicon are heavier than expected: transport properties of extremely high mobility electrons and holes in silicon MOSFETs
Diraq's collaborators at UNSW Sydney show that holes in silicon chips carry significantly more effective mass than assumed, helping explain why hole mobility lags electron mobility by an order of magnitude in otherwise high-quality silicon devices. The team recorded the highest hole mobility ever reported for this device type, strengthening the materials science foundation for both electron- and hole-based silicon spin qubits.
